Why Do International Students Need Medical Insurance?
Healthcare services in Canada can be expensive without insurance. All international students at General Lee Aviation must carry appropriate medical coverage to protect themselves in case of illness, injury, or accidents during their time in Canada.
What Type of Coverage Do I Need?
Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) is the provincial healthcare system that covers basic medical services.
Youβre eligible for AHCIP if:
-
You hold a 12-month study permit and plan to reside in Alberta for a year or more.
You may also qualify with a permit between 3 to 12 months, if you include a written statement confirming your intent to remain in Alberta for at least 12 months.
π If you apply within three months of arriving in Alberta, your coverage will begin on either the date of entry or the start date on your permit β whichever is later.
If Youβre Studying for Less Than 12 Months
Students studying for under a year are not eligible for AHCIP and must instead purchase private health insurance. You can arrange this in your home country or in Canada, but make sure to apply within five days of arrival. If more time has passed, contact Broker Advantage at 1β877β294β1810 for assistance.
π‘ Remember: Youβll likely need to pay for any treatments upfront and submit receipts to your insurer for reimbursement.
We recommend reaching out to at least two or three insurance providers to compare plans and find what suits you best β we do not endorse any specific company.
Whatβs Included in AHCIP?
